Match Report: Belmont Wins Against Xaverian

Belmont Earns Two Victories Against Xaverian

April 5th, 2017 – Away Match – 1st XV & 2nd XV

Varsity Score:   Belmont: 13                 Xaverian: 10

Both sides came out and played a very physical and well structured contest, although there were a lot of early season errors which impacted the flow of the game.  Belmont went up 3-0 after Xaverian conceded a penalty about 30m from the end goal area and senior Marvyn Dorchin made the kick to take an early lead 10 minutes into the game.  From the ensuing kickoff an errant pass from a Belmont attacker was intercepted by Xaverian and then the visitors committed a penalty in front of the goal posts and Xaverian opted for the penalty and evened the score a 3-3.  Over the next 10 minutes there was a lot of back and forth, but Belmont was camped out in Xaverian’s half and eventually got to the goal line where Xaverian committed repeated penalties and Belmont was awarded what is called a penalty try (referee determines one team has committed repeated penalties which would have led to a score if they had not-7 points awarded and no conversion kick necessary) and took a 10-3 lead at the 22 minute mark.  Over the rest of the half there was some good play by both sides and some handling errors as well.  Belmont’s Laurent Brabo was solid at the fullback position and stood out amongst the backs, as did Ben Jones amongst the forwards in his first ever rugby match.  In the 2nd half the errors for both sides continued and eventually Xaverian took a kick at midfield, ran it back deep into Belmont territory and scored off of a line out and tied the game at 10-10 four minutes into the half.    About 13 minutes later Belmont was awarded another penalty which Dorchin made again and went up 13-10.  The last 20 minutes saw a lot of back and forth and tense moments as each team was looking to find a crack in the oppositions defense, but neither would give and the match ended with Belmont maintaining their 3 point lead and earning a hard fought victory.

JV Score:   Belmont: 36            Xaverian: 0

In the JV match the visiting Belmont side scored early and often and the team structure and flow was very impressive.  The team was not hindered by the handling errors the varsity teams struggled with and played a nice style of rugby that was enjoyable to watch.  Leaders on the day were Sam Sagherian, Max Murphy, Owen Loveluck, and George Fitzgerald who spearheaded the team and made their presence known throughout the contest.  By the final whistle, Belmont was up 36-0 for a well deserved victory.
